About Us

Born in Ballymena

For 70 years, Doherty and Gray Ltd. have been based in Ballymena, County Antrim. Adjacent to the Glens of Antrim, we have made a home for Doherty and Gray Ltd.

From our humble beginnings in 1954, the company founded by Patsy Doherty and Bobby Gray has expanded to become a major employer and integrated into the fabric of the area.

With that experience and our dedicated team of staff, we can bring you the very finest of quality products including our Gold Star and Prima Valley Lines.

Partnerships based on quality

We pride ourselves in the work we do with Northern Ireland’s agri-food sector. Since 1954 we have valued our relationships with generations of local farmers.

Northern Ireland has always had a skilled agri-foods community. We are at the very heart of the community and we rely on the networks we have forged and the friendships we have made.

This didn’t happen overnight though. We’ve worked on it for years!

70 Years of Quality Beef and Lamb

In 1954, two men’s vision of a company dedicated to providing retailers with high quality beef and lamb has grown Doherty and Gray Ltd. into what it is today.

Patrick Doherty (Patsy) and Robert Gray (Bobby) formed Doherty and Gray Ltd. Building on Patsy’s experience as a cattle dealer and Bobby’s as a WW2 Rationing Officer. Having been founded in 1954, we now are the oldest existing red meat company in Northern Ireland.

In 1987, Doherty and Gray Ltd. acquired Richard Hull’s (now Hull’s of Ballymena). In the same year we moved to our current site on the Woodside Road in Ballymena. Since then we have constructed our purpose-built facilities including our state of the art offices built in 2010.

Today, many of the Doherty family continue to work in this family business. This includes Brendan (Managing Director), Seamus (Retail Director), Terence Doherty (Procurement Director) and Frances Doherty (Operations Director).
